Product Information

On this island, Valrhona has selected an outstanding cocoa variety rooted in the ancestral land of an Amerindian population that once inhabited the island. We chose Grenada to enrich our collection of Single Origin Grand Cru chocolates because of the richness and complexity of its volcanic soils swept by Caribbean winds. Its cocoa is among the finest and most complex in the world, having been nourished by the cinnamon, nutmeg and exotic fruits that abound on the island, but it also draws its freshness and peppermint notes from the breezes that blow in off the Atlantic. When we shine a spotlight on a terroir, we also seek to highlight its history and culture. This is why the name “Kalingo” was chosen, in reference to the “Kalinago”, one of the peoples who originally inhabited the island of Grenada.

Kalingo is a Grand Cru from Grenada, the “spice island” where the best nutmeg in the world grows, as well as some renowned cocoa beans. Cocoa was originally buffed and crushed underfoot in large copper basins during a traditional dance. Today, small farmers grow it on plots covering one or two hectares. Grenada’s terroir is enriched by its volcanic soil, and it is perfectly mirrored in Kalingo’s own intense flavors. The island’s natural exposure to the wind goes a long way in explaining the chocolate’s intense freshness and finesse.

I love introducing people to Kalingo! Its origin is quite unique and its classic vanilla bean notes never fail to surprise anyone who tries it.
