We chose Sur del Lago (Las Virtudes, Tucani), a Venezuelan region known for being home to a rich soil that lends Araguani all its aromatic complexity. The name Araguani is a reference to the Araguaney, an iconic Venezuelan tree, but also to the Guarani, one of the country’s indigenous peoples.
Valrhona shares a rich history with Venezuela. It all began in the 1990s with a commitment to rehabilitate the country’s ancient cocoa varieties – Porcelana, for example – and thereby ensure their survival. To this day we remain dedicated to our Venezuelan partner so that we can preserve the genetic diversity of this region’s cocoa plants, which make Araguani so special.
In Venezuela, every village has its own cocoa which is its heritage and its pride. Araguani is a homage to all those enthusiasts who, for centuries, have selected their cocoa trees so that they can obtain “el mejor cacao del mundo”.
Pierre Costet - SENSORY EXPERTISE & COCA DIVISION
Araguani’s touch of vanilla, woody notes and hint of bitterness take you on an adventure through Venezuela’s patchwork of mountains, forests and salt water lakes.
A Valrhona partner since 2016, Cacao San José is a family business that has been producing high-quality cocoa since 1830 in the crop’s ancestral home, Venezuela. It grows Criollo, a cocoa with a fine, woody aroma which is also a symbol of resilience and national pride. It is committed to social well-being and sustainability, which is why 100% of its plots have been geolocated since 2022.
